How to Read a Supplement Label More Confidently

28 September 2026

Supplement labels contain a lot of information in a small space. Knowing what each section means can make product comparisons easier and help you use a product as intended.

Start with the serving information

Check the suggested serving size and directions for use. The amount listed for an ingredient often relates to that serving, not necessarily to a single tablet, capsule, gummy or sachet.

Review the ingredient list

Look at both active ingredients and other ingredients. If you have allergies, dietary restrictions or take other medicines or supplements, this information is especially important.

Check the directions and warnings

Read storage instructions, age guidance, warnings and any advice about taking the product with food or at a particular time of day.

More is not automatically better

Do not exceed the recommended intake simply because a product is a supplement. If you are unsure whether a supplement is appropriate for you, ask a qualified healthcare professional.
